Toenail Treatment in Leeds

Professional Treatment for Thick, Painful and Problem Toenails

Toenail problems are very common and can affect comfort, mobility and confidence. At Total Health Care North, we provide professional toenail treatment for a wide range of conditions, including thickened toenails, discoloured nails, fungal nail infections and painful or difficult-to-cut nails.

Our experienced podiatrists offer safe, effective treatment to improve the health and appearance of your toenails while helping to prevent future problems.

Common Toenail Problems We Treat

Toenail conditions can develop for many reasons, including injury, infection, footwear pressure or underlying health conditions. We regularly treat:

  • Thickened toenails

  • Fungal nail infections

  • Discoloured or yellow nails

  • Brittle or crumbling nails

  • Painful toenails

  • Nails that are difficult to cut

  • Ingrown toenails (mild to moderate cases)

  • We also offer routine toe nail cutting

Left untreated, toenail problems can worsen over time and become more difficult to manage, especially if they cause pain or affect walking.

Whether your nails have become thick, uncomfortable or unsightly, we can help you find a treatment plan that works for you.

Does this sound like you?

  • Is your toe sore and tender?

  • Is the skin around the nail inflamed and swollen?

  • Is the edge of the nail infected with puss?

  • Is the discomfort stopping you from doing the things you love or impacting your daily life?

  • You cannot wait for the NHS?

  • Is the irritation getting worse?

Thick Toenail Treatment

Thick toenails are one of the most common reasons patients visit a podiatrist. They can be caused by repeated pressure, ageing, fungal infection or trauma.

Thick nails can make it difficult to trim your toenails safely at home and may cause discomfort inside footwear.

Our treatment includes:

  • Careful reduction (thinning) of the nail

  • Safe trimming and shaping

  • Removal of debris under the nail

  • Advice on preventing recurrence

  • Ongoing routine care if needed

Regular podiatry treatment can make thick toenails easier to manage and significantly improve comfort.

Fungal Nail Treatment

Fungal nail infections are a common condition that can affect one or more toenails. They often cause:

  • Yellow or white discolouration

  • Thickened nails

  • Brittle or crumbly texture

  • Distorted nail shape

  • Spread to other nails if untreated

Fungal infections can take time to improve and usually require consistent treatment.

At your appointment, we will assess the severity of the infection and recommend the most suitable treatment options, which may include:

  • Nail reduction to improve appearance and comfort

  • Prescription or over-the-counter topical treatments (where appropriate)

  • Advice on foot hygiene and footwear

  • Ongoing monitoring and maintenance

Early treatment is important to prevent the infection from worsening or spreading.

Painful Toenails and Nail Care

Toenails can become painful due to pressure, incorrect cutting, trauma or underlying nail conditions.

Professional toenail care can help relieve discomfort and prevent further problems. During your appointment we will:

  • Carefully assess the affected nail

  • Reduce nail thickness if required

  • Trim nails safely and correctly

  • Relieve pressure causing discomfort

  • Provide footwear and self-care advice

Many patients experience immediate relief after treatment.

Ingrown Toenail Treatment (Mild to Moderate Cases)

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, redness and sometimes infection.

Early treatment can often prevent the need for more invasive procedures.

We can help by:

  • Carefully easing pressure on the nail edge

  • Trimming and reshaping the nail

  • Reducing inflammation where appropriate

  • Providing advice to prevent recurrence

If the problem is severe or recurring, we may recommend a minor surgical procedure (nail surgery), which we can discuss during your appointment if needed.

Toenail Cutting and Nail Care

Many people struggle with toenail cutting due to thick nails, reduced flexibility, arthritis, poor eyesight or difficulty reaching their feet. Over time, nails can become uncomfortable, overgrown or difficult to manage safely at home.

At Total Health Care, we provide a professional toenail cutting service as part of our podiatry care, ensuring your nails are trimmed safely, comfortably and correctly.

Our treatment includes:

  • Professional toenail cutting and shaping

  • Reduction of thick or overgrown nails

  • Careful management of difficult-to-cut toenails

  • Removal of debris under the nail where needed

  • Prevention of painful nail pressure in footwear

  • Advice on ongoing nail maintenance

Regular professional toenail cutting can help prevent common problems such as ingrown toenails, discomfort in shoes and nail damage caused by incorrect trimming.

This service is particularly beneficial for older adults, people with reduced mobility, and anyone who finds it difficult or unsafe to cut their own toenails.

Why Toenail Problems Develop

  • Toenail conditions can develop for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Tight or poorly fitting footwear

  • Repeated trauma (sport or walking pressure)

  • Poor nail cutting technique

  • Age-related nail changes

  • Fungal infections

  • Underlying health conditions such as diabetes

  • Reduced circulation

  • Genetic nail shape

  • Understanding the cause helps us provide more effective long-term treatment.

Surgical Treatments for Ingrown Toenails

Partial Nail Removal

Partial nail removal only involves removing the piece of nail that is digging into your skin. Our Podiatrist will numb your toe and then narrow the toenail. A partial nail removal is 98 percent effective for preventing future ingrown toenails.

During a partial nail removal, the sides of the nail are cut away so that the edges are completely straight. We may also treat your toe with a compound called phenol, which keeps the nail from growing back.

Total Nail Removal

Total nail removal may be used if your ingrown nail is caused by thickening.

Our Podiatrist will give you a local Anaesthetic  and then remove the entire nail in a procedure called a matrixectomy.
