Ingrown Toenails: When to See a Podiatrist vs. Home Care

More Than Just a "Nip" with the Clippers
An ingrown toenail (medically known as Onychocryptosis) occurs when the side of the nail cuts into the surrounding skin. It starts as a minor irritation, but it can quickly escalate into a throbbing, red, and infected mess that makes even wearing a sock feel like torture.
At Total Health Care, we often see patients who have spent weeks trying "bathroom surgery" at home, only to make the problem worse. Knowing when to step away from the clippers and call a professional can be the difference between a quick fix and a long-term infection.
How Do I Know if It’s Infected?
If you notice any of the following, it is time to stop home treatment and book an appointment at our Bolton or Leeds clinics:
Persistent Redness: The skin around the nail is angry and dark red.
Swelling: The toe looks "sausage-like" compared to the others.
Pus or Discharge: This is a clear sign of bacterial infection.
Overgrown Skin: If the skin is starting to grow over the edge of the nail (hypergranulation tissue).
Why Do They Keep Coming Back?
If you suffer from recurring ingrown nails, it’s usually due to one of three things:
Involved Nail Shape: Some people naturally have "involution," where the nail curves deeply like a staple.
Poor Cutting Technique: Cutting down into the corners often leaves a sharp "spike" behind that digs deeper as the nail grows.
Tight Footwear: Narrow toe-boxes in work shoes or football boots compress the toes together.
The Permanent Solution: Nail Surgery
For many, the fear of "surgery" keeps them in pain for years. At Total Health Care, we perform Partial Nail Avulsions (PNA)—a simple, 30-minute procedure that offers a permanent fix.
Painless: We use a local anaesthetic to completely numb the toe. You won't feel a thing.
Permanent: We apply a chemical called Phenol to the root of the nail spike to stop it from ever growing back.
Quick Recovery: Most patients are back in their normal shoes within 24–48 hours.
3 "Don’ts" for Ingrown Toenail
DON'T cut a "V" into the middle of the nail. (This is an old myth and does absolutely nothing to help the edges!)
DON'T use unsterilised tweezers or bathroom scissors.
DON'T ignore it and hope it "grows out." It usually grows in.
